Important Notes

  1. Applications will be accepted as early as 4 weeks before the application deadline, but no earlier.

  2. Please contact our office by email if you do not receive a follow-up email from us within 3 business days of submitting your pre-application.

  3. Entrance examinations are conducted online; applicants are not required to travel to Japan to take the exams.

Important Dates

Submission deadlines (in Japan time) for 2027 enrollment:

  1. September 30, 2026 for an exam during November 2–6, 2026* and enrollment in April or October, 2027
  2. April 30, 2027 for an exam during June 1–4, 2027* and enrollment in October, 2027

*Two additional days are reserved for entrance examinations under exceptional circumstances, if applicants or evaluation committee members are unavailable during the official exam week (for examination period 1, November 9 and 10, 2026; for examination period 2, June 7 and 8, 2027)

 

Application Steps

1) Carefully read the current Application Guidelines (a PDF file is posted on this page).

2) Discuss your intention to apply with your prospective supervisor (see the list of eligible faculty members at the bottom of this page and Appendix 2 for additional faculty members of the Department of Primatology and Wildlife Research*). To initiate contact with our faculty members, you may directly contact them or use the online system of the Admissions Assistance Office (AAO)**. In either case, you are requested to submit an online application through the AAO before proceeding to the next step so that we can confirm your eligibility.

3) After your AAO application is approved, submit a pre-application to us by clicking the "Start Pre-Application" button below. The pre-application is reviewed by our office. Once approved, you will receive an email*** with a link to complete the full application.

*Appendix 2 includes faculty members who are not eligible to serve as a primary supervisor of graduate students. However, they may still be willing to support your studies in cooperation with an eligible faculty member.

**The AAO Application is used to identify potential matches between prospective applicants and faculty members; it is not a substitute for application to our graduate course.

***Please note that this and some other automated emails from our office will be sent from the following technical staff address: hirata.kanako.5a@ kyoto-u.ac.jp.

****Contact us (cicasp [at] mail2 [dot] adm [dot] kyoto-u [dot] ac [dot] jp) regarding past exams from recent years.

The online application system will be available between September 1 and September 30, and again between April 1 and April 30. Please check again during those periods to apply.
