Important Note: CICASP does not provide financial support for students enrolling in the program. However, we can provide support to students wishing to secure financial support through other means, as described below. Before deciding to apply to CICASP, we strongly recommend all potential applicants to first explore the possibility of a "Monbukagakusho" scholarship, offered by the Japan Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). MEXT scholarship applications are typically made through the Japanese embassy in your country of citizenship. Applications are typically accepted during May and June, but vary across countries so be sure to check with your local embassy well in advance of your expected enrollment year.

*Note that MEXT scholars entering the Primate Research Institute do not apply through CICASP, but are nonetheless required to fulfill all entrance requirements of regular CICASP students, including entrance examination taken in English (for those entering the Master’s degree program only), presentation of Master’s thesis (for those entering the doctoral degree program only), and an interview.

Housing

A student dormitory is available for those enrolled at any of our Inuyama campus departments, subject to room availability. The cost of an apartment is ca. 5,000 yen / month. Expenses for water, gas, and electricity are not included in this price. Please note that these are shared accommodations with a maximum of two students per apartment. For applicants to the Wildlife Research Center in Kyoto, please contact us for information about housing options.

The Leading Graduate Program in Primatology and Wildlife Science (PWS)

Students enrolled in our program will also have the opportunity of applying to the Leading Graduate Program in Primatology and Wildlife Science (PWS) offered by Kyoto University. This program aims to extend students' skill sets beyond basic research and thereby produce professionals in conservation, welfare, and outreach development. To achieve this goal, the PWS Program emphasizes education in wildlife conservation, animal welfare, and skills for outreach programs. In addition to offering various extra educational components, inclusive of field- and laboratory-based training practicums, students enrolled in the PWS program may benefit from limited funds for travel- and research-related expenses. For more information on the program, please visit the PWS website

Tuition Exemption

Tuition fees at Kyoto University are 535,800JPY per annum, to be paid in two installments coinciding with each academic semester, with a one-time admission fee of 267,900JPY to be paid after enrollment. Admission fees must be paid in all cases, but graduate students who experience financial difficulties may be eligible for a full or half tuition waiver depending on academic performance. Since the exemption may be applied for by all degree-seeking students, the selection process is competitive. Applications for tuition fees exemption are available from the administration office in the first month of each semester.

Teaching and Research Assistantships

CICASP may offer a limited number of teaching assistantships each semester (subject to budgetary approval) that can provide a small amount of supplementary funding. All students are encouraged to apply, but we try to prioritize students in need of financial support for these positions. Additionally, students at the doctoral level who have no other sources of funding are qualified to receive research assistantships.

Scholarships

A limited number of scholarships are available for those wishing to study at Kyoto University. It should be noted, however, that the selection processes for the scholarships are very competitive, and in most cases applicants are only accepted after entrance to the university.

It is generally necessary, therefore, to have sufficient financial resources prior to entering Kyoto University. For information on scholarships, please visit the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) and click Study in Japan » Scholarships » Scholarships for International Students in Japan

Foreign Government Scholarships
Foreign government scholarships are another scholarship option. As of May 2009, there are students at Kyoto University from Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand receiving such scholarships. For further information, please contact the appropriate agency in your country.
Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarships for Privately Financed Students
Privately financed international students currently studying at a university in Japan are eligible to apply for an Honors Scholarship from the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO). As of April 2013, graduate student awardees receive 65,000 yen per month. Information in Japanese only can be found on their website. Please contact us for further details.
Scholarship from Private Foundations
The application process for the scholarships from private foundations varies. Some can be made directly by the individual, and some must be made through the applicant's university. Please click here for information about private scholarships for Kyoto University students.
Japanese Government Scholarships for Graduate Students

Japanese Government Scholarships for International Students

Prospective students can contact us for more information about the MEXT program.

* International students in our program have been or are being funded by Monbukagakusho Scholarships (both regular and Honors programs), JSPS Research Fellowships for Young Scientists, as well as private foundations such as the Mitsubishi Corporation Scholarship.
