International Primatology Lecture 8: Dr. John Mitani

Primate behavioral ecologist Dr. John Mitani will be the speaker of the 8th International Primatology Lecture, titled "My Life among the Apes". Dr. Mitani is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Michigan, who has conducted over 40 years of research on gibbons, orangutans, gorillas, chimpanzees, and bonobos. He is the 2022 recipient of the Charles R. Darwin Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association of Biological Anthropologists.

In this lecture, Dr. Mitani will tell us about his 26-year-long study of chimpanzees in Kibale National Park, Uganda, and share his career advice to future primate researchers. Not to be missed by anyone who is about to embark on a multi-decadal field study, or anyone who wants to learn more about the behaviors of our closest evolutionary relatives!

International Primatology Lectures on Past, Present and Future Perspectives of the Field

In this lecture series, we explore various origin stories as told by famed members of our primatology comunity. All lectures are held in a private Zoom community and live streamed to our CICASP YouTube Channel.

Unlike most academic lectures, which are usually focused on testing scientific hypotheses, this series is designed to offer a feel for how one becomes a professional in the field of primatology. In a way, we might think of it as a career primer for young primatologists just starting their own journeys into the nether regions of Academia. At the same time, anyone might enjoy the stories told of big dreams, exotic locations and species, and the humanity inherent in forging a new path in life and in work.
