On 25 October 2013, it was announced that Dr. Tetsuro Matsuzawa, Professor at Kyoto University's Primate Research Institute and Director of CICASP was selected this year as a Person of Cultural Merit by the government of Japan. The award ceremony is set to take place at the Imperial Palace on the Day of Culture (3 November).
The award is given annually along with the Order of Culture to exceptional individuals who have performed distinguished services in the field of culture, including for example artists, athletes and as in this case, scientists. Professor Matsuzawa was selected, among other things, for his pioneering work on comparative cognition involving chimpanzees (the Ai project), his unique research style combining field observation with field and laboratory experiments, and his important discoveries about the similarities and differences between chimpanzees and humans, with implications for evolution and human nature.
