The 17th International Primatology Lecture will be presented by Dr. Janette Wallis. In her talk, titled “Building an Independent Career in Primatology through Research, Teaching, Conservation Consultation, and Service”, Dr. Wallis will share her experiences of carving out a career as an independent researcher by avoiding the usual academic path and, instead, seeking out unique opportunities for adventure, education, and service.
About the speaker: Dr. Janette Wallis currently directs the Kasokwa-Kityedo Forest Project in a network of forest fragments in Uganda. Research at the site focuses on primate behavioral ecology, reproduction, conservation, and human-wildlife interactions.
Dr. Wallis earned her Ph.D. in zoology, psychology, and anthropology from the University of Oklahoma. She has worked in education, research, and conservation projects throughout Africa, including in Uganda, Tanzania, Gabon, Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, and Sierra Leone. She is the Editor-in-Chief of African Primates, the IUCN SSC Primate Specialist Group’s journal dedicated to African primates, and is a Vice Chair of the Primate Specialists’ Africa Section. She also serves on the Society for Conservation Biology - Africa Section’s Board of Directors and leads the Young Women in Conservation Biology network.

In this lecture series, we explore various origin stories as told by famed members of our primatology comunity. Most lectures are live-streamed and archived on our CICASP YouTube Channel.
Unlike most academic lectures, which are usually focused on testing scientific hypotheses, this series is designed to offer a feel for how one becomes a professional in the field of primatology. In a way, we might think of it as a career primer for young primatologists just starting their own journeys into the nether regions of Academia. At the same time, anyone might enjoy the stories told of big dreams, exotic locations and species, and the humanity inherent in forging a new path in life and in work.
Check out all videos in this series on our CICASP YouTube channel playlist, and follow us on Facebook and Twitter to keep up with all our activities.
