Join us on The PrimateCast as we cover the 5th Student Conference on Conservation Science (SCCS) Bangalore – India.

The PrimateCast crossed a new border by rolling out its mobile podcasting unit to cover the meetings of the SCCS held between September 25-28, 2014, at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India. This year’s conference was a great success and gathered hundreds of the best conservation researchers of Africa and Asia. So, enjoy!

The PrimateCast was at SCCS Bangalore 2014

… and hope to be present at other SCCS that happen every year around the globe. Bangalore is one of six SCCS events worldwide, along with Cambridge, Australia, New-York, Beijing and Hungary. SCCS events are designed for young conservation scientists to help them gain experience, learn new ideas and make contacts that will be valuable for their future careers.

At SCCS Bangalore 2014, we chatted with 6 conservationists about their experience and work, ranging from the conservation of mountain gorillas in Uganda to the phenology of dragonflies in Sri Lanka.

In the first interview, podcast volunteer Durgesh sat down with Dr. Ananda Kumar to talk about human-elephant conflicts in the Western Ghats, India, and the methods he and his team use to face these issues. We then hear from Radika Kothari about her experiences working as the director of Snow Leopard Conservancy India Trust in Ladakh, India. In the 3rd interview, Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka talks about the importance of local communities in the conservation of emblematic species such as mountain gorillas and chimpanzees in Uganda. This is followed by an interview with Dan Brockington. After listening to his talk, Dina could not resist to interview him about his work on celebrity and livelihood change, as well as “Why the media always features white people working in Africa?”. And finally, because SCCS is a student conference, we listen to two students, Naven Hon and Amila Sumanapala, talking about their studies and their interests in attending this year’s conference.
